The Estonian Centre for Defence Investment and US company Lewis Machine & Tool (LMT Defense) signed a contract in Davenport, Iowa, on 1 July to supply the Estonian Defence Forces (EDF) with a new standard rifle, the Estonian Ministry of Defence announced on its website the next day.
The ministry said Estonia would initially acquire 16,000 customised automatic rifles, plus accessories. The first weapons are scheduled to arrive in Estonia at the beginning of 2020 for the EDF's Scouts Battalion. This will be followed by deliveries to the 1st and 2nd Infantry Brigades, volunteers of the Defence League, the Estonian police and border guard, and the Ministry of Justice.
