Photographs of a Russian-made Pantsir-S1 air defence system that has purportedly arrived in Libya began circulating on social media channels on 18 June.
A system mounted on a MAN SX45 8×8 truck – a configuration only previously seen on the Pantsir-S1s acquired by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – was seen being carried by a transporter in photographs purportedly taken at Jafra Air Base and the town of Gharyan, 430 km to the northwest.
Both locations are controlled by the Libyan National Army (LNA), a powerful UAE-backed faction. Gharyan is on one of the primary axes that the LNA is advancing towards Tripoli in an attempt to take the capital from forces aligned with the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA).
