Swedish white paper calls for doubling of defence efforts

15 May 2019

Sweden's cross-party Defence Commission presented its final report, 'Defensive power - Sweden's Security Policy and the Development of its Military Defence 2021-2025' to Minister for Defence Peter Hultqvist on 14 May.

With the deterioration in the security situation in Europe due to a more aggressive Russia, the white paper recommends that Sweden develop its total defence strategy to prepare against an armed attack, which it does not rule out, and "other acts of war against Sweden".

The commission's proposals include reinforcement and enlargement of Sweden's military wartime organisation as of 1 January 2021, aiming to improve the balance between different components of military defence, such as command and control, combat and support units, as well as strengthening the capacity for sustained action by increasing the number of units.
