The UK Royal Navy (RN) has secured a GBP75 million (USD98 million) injection from the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) Defence Transformation Fund to advance initiatives intended to ‘mainstream’ the introduction of autonomous technologies into the fleet, and bring forward the introduction of a suite of offboard mine-hunting systems into the RN’s mine-countermeasures (MCM) force.
A joint military and industry technology accelerator, known as NavyX, would streamline the way the RN procures autonomous systems and new technologies to increase mass and lethality. The project will establish a new facility where industry, defence, and academia can test, evaluate, and develop new equipment and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques.
