The Spanish cabinet has finally given the order to go-ahead with the construction of five multipurpose F-110 class frigates for the Spanish Navy (Armada Española) at a cost of EUR4.31 billion (USD4.83 billion).
It will be the biggest-ever order for the Ferrol yard of state-owned shipbuilder Navantia, the national government delegate for the Galicia region, Javier Losada, said on 29 March.
Speaking following the cabinet approval, Losada said the first ship is scheduled to be delivered in 2026 and the last in 2031. Spending on the vessels is budgeted at EUR41 million for the first year, and the construction will involve 7,000 direct and indirect jobs, he said.
