Turkish-US political standoff likely to renew in 2019, risking US arms restrictions and another Turkish lira rout

On 15 March 2019, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that Turkey would be making no "U-turns" in its purchase of S-400 missile defence systems from Russia, which he said would be received in July 2019.

  • The US is likely to follow through with an arms embargo, including an exclusion from the F-35 programme, if Turkey proceeds with its purchase of Russian S-400s. Erdoğan's statement came despite US Department of Defense spokesman Charles Summer saying on 8 March that Turkey would face "grave consequences", including the withholding of F-35 aircraft and Patriot Missile batteries, if it proceeds with the purchase.
