Brazil could relocate its existing submarines

The Brazilian Navy’s Submarine Force Command (ComForS) is considering transferring its four Tupi-class Type 209/1400 and single Tikuna-class Type 209/1400mod diesel-electric powered attack submarines to the Naval Complex of Itaguaí (CNI) in Rio de Janeiro state from Almirante Castro e Silva Naval Base (BACS) in Niterói, the service told Jane’s .

If the transfer is implemented, the BACS will be preserved as a support facility for the submarines, the service added.

The CNI is scheduled to be completed in 2022 to gradually host four Riachuelo-class diesel-electric submarines and the SN Álvaro Alberto nuclear-powered submarine. The naval base and facilities to build and maintain submarines are being set up as part of the esimated BRL35 billion submarines development program (PROSUB).
