Chile has hired Finnish naval technology company Surma to provide the electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) system for the country's new icebreaker, which is currently under construction in the state-run shipyard ASMAR.
"Surma will assist ASMAR throughout the multiyear project managing the EMC Working Group," the company said. The new vessel, known as Project 'Antártica I', is scheduled to be launched in 2022 and commissioned in 2023. Based on the VARD 9 203 design, the platform will measure 111 m in length, have a maximum speed of 15 kt, and have space for two Super Puma helicopters.
The new icebreaker will replace Almirante Óscar Viel (AP-46), which was decommissioned on 11 February.
