Argentina restarts work on ARA Santa Cruz

19 February 2019

Maintenance work on the Argentine TR-1700-class submarine ARA Santa Cruz has resumed, according to Argentine Defence Minister Oscar Aguad.

Work on the boat was halted by the Argentine Defence Ministry following the loss at sea of sister submarine ARA San Juan on 15 November 2017 to determine whether that accident was caused by a failure that could be repeated on ARA Santa Cruz.

It will reportedly take two years to return Santa Cruz to service.

As Argentina's only other boat, the Type 209-class ARA Salta, is out of service, the Argentine Navy has no submarines operational.
