Transportation strikes over extortion increases supply chain disruption risks along the San Pedro Sula-Puerto Cortes corridor

15 February 2019

On 14 February Security Minister Julian Pacheco announced that the anti-gang Operation Morazán II was refocusing its strategy on high crime urban centres linked to Puerto Cortes after confirming that there had been an increase in attacks against transport service operators in Cortes department.

Three taxi drivers were shot dead in two simultaneous attacks in Choloma on 11 February by individuals on a motorcycle. To date, seven taxi drivers as well as a cargo vehicle driver for fruit company Chiquita have been killed in 2019. Police stated the incidents are related to extortion payment delays to the Barrio 18 (M-18) and MS-13 gangs.
