Moscow warns Oslo over its plans to receive nuclear submarines

Attacking plans to equip a Norwegian port near Tromsø to handle visiting nuclear submarines, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told local media on 7 February, “Russia will answer Norway’s plans to facilitate nuclear submarines and take every measure to ensure its own security.”

Work was reported in the Norwegian press to have started on the project in January.

Zakharova accused Oslo of building up military infrastructure and intensifying tensions in the North Atlantic.

With the 2009 closure of Olavsvern naval base near Tromsø, allied submarines have lacked a secure northern port.

The Norwegian Joint Headquarters (NJHQ) told Jane’s on 13 February, “The Norwegian Armed Forces have been tasked by our Ministry of Defence to find a suitable port of call for nuclear-powered vessels north of the Arctic circle.
