NATO has rejected Russian claims that the 9M729 ground-launched cruise missile (GLCM) does not violate the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. The treaty was one of the main topics of a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) in Brussels on 25 January during which allied ambassadors repeated that Russia was in violation of the treaty.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who chaired the NRC, told journalists after the meeting, “NATO foreign ministers met on this issue in December and all allies agreed that Russia’s SSC-8 system [with the 9M729] violates the INF Treaty. Today, allies urged Russia again to return to full and verifiable compliance with the treaty.”
