The Bundeswehr awarded Accuracy International (AI) a contract through its German agent POL-TEC to refurbish and modernise the German Army's G22 and G22A1 sniper rifles to the G22A2 standard, the company announced on 17 January.

The order is for 780 G22A2s to be delivered by 2020. The rifles will remain in 7.62×67 mm (.300 Winchester Magnum calibre).

The decision to upgrade the G22 rifles was made in October 2018, when Germany's Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr: BAAINBw) awarded POL-TEC the contract.
