Surface Navy 2019: BAE Systems investing in software-defined SIGINT systems

16 January 2019

BAE Systems is investing in making its signals intelligence (SIGINT) systems software-defined and open architecture (OA) to enable customers to rapidly pursue new threat signals.

Joshua Niedzwiecki, director of the company’s adaptive sensors business, told Jane’s on 14 January that these software-defined SIGINT systems will benefit customers in the airborne domain because sometimes a customer may encounter an enemy using a known radio signal with a particular model that may have many different variants and configuration settings. Software-defined SIGINT systems, he said, will enable analysts to assess enemy communication signal data, make adjustments, and send a software update in real time to an airborne platform that allows the aircraft to better meet mission requirements.
