Brazil to resume operations with Heron 1 UAVs

15 January 2019

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) and Federal Police will jointly operate the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Heron 1 medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), it was announced by the Brazilian Official Gazette on 8 January.

The agreement was tabled on 27 December 2018 and will run through to 31 December 2019, although this could be extended.

Two Heron 1s were received from IAI in 2010 but were under-utilised due to budget constraints and other issues. Operations with the UAVs reportedly stopped in 2016.

With more regular operation of the Heron 1s, Brazil will significantly increase the ability to conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions over its land borders, principally those in the Amazonian region.
