RENAMO leadership contest unlikely to threaten peace deal between main opposition and ruling party in Mozambique

08 January 2019

Mozambique's main opposition party, the Mozambican National Resistance (Resistência Nacional Moçambicana: RENAMO), is to hold elections for a new leader during the party's congress in Gorongosa from 15 to 17 January. The contest takes place ahead of the country's general election scheduled for 15 October.

The two main candidates to lead RENAMO are Elias Dhlakama, who has served in the national military since 1992 and is the brother of former RENAMO leader Afonso Dhlakama, who died on 3 May 2018; and the party's current interim leader, Ossufo Momade.
