Ukraine adds modernised interceptor vessel to Azov Sea flotilla

04 January 2019

Despite Russia’s blockade of the Kerch Strait and access to the Azov Sea, Kiev has been able to add to its maritime inventory in the area.

The Ukrainian Cabinet Uryadovy news portal reported that an upgraded Project UMS-1000 PC 12 M-2 high-speed interceptor craft entered service on 2 January with the State Border Guard maritime detachment at the naval and shipbuilding port of Mariupol.

Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov announced on 28 December 2018 that 20 new boats 32–35 m long were planned for the border guard. “They will be manufactured at one of our plants in co-operation with one of the leading French companies,” Avakov said.
