Trump reportedly orders major US troop drawdown from Afghanistan

21 December 2018

A day after US President Donald Trump announced his decision to pull US troops out of Syria, a US media outlet has reported that the president has also ordered a major troop drawdown from Afghanistan: a development that, if confirmed, would come at a time when top US generals have emphasised that the 17-year-old conflict in the Central Asian country is still at a "stalemate".

Quoting unnamed US officials, The Wall Street Journal reported on 20 December that more than 7,000 US troops in Afghanistan would begin returning home "in the coming weeks". "The move will come as the first stage of a phased drawdown" and the start of a conclusion to the conflict that officials say could take at least many months, the newspaper said.
