New CH-4 UAV variant to feature kerosene-burning engine

18 December 2018

A new variant of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) Cai Hong 4 (Rainbow 4, or CH-4) strike-capable, medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) will be fitted with a kerosene-burning engine, the state-owned Global Times newspaper reported on 18 December.

"The CH-4 will soon see its old piston engine that burns gasoline replaced with a domestically made next-generation heavy-fuel engine that burns kerosene," the newspaper quoted a spokesperson for the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics (CAAA), the flight technology development arm of CASC, as saying, adding that both the exact date for the upgrade and the designation of the new variant would be announced at a later date.
