USMC Hercules and Hornet crash off Japan

05 December 2018

A US Marine Corps (USMC) Lockheed Martin KC-130J Hercules tanker and Boeing F/A-18D Hornet combat aircraft crashed off the coast of Japan on 6 December following what the corps describes as “a mishap”.

The two aircraft with a combined seven marines onboard came down about 320 km off the coast of Japan at about 0200 h local time. While the USMC has said an investigation is ongoing, early reports are that the aircraft were undertaking aerial refuelling when the incident happened.

A combined USMC and Japanese search-and-rescue operation was ongoing at the time of writing, with two of the crew members confirmed by the USMC to have been rescued: one was transferred to Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni and the other to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
