The French government Defence Procurement Agency (Direction générale de l’armement – DGA) has awarded MBDA a contract to develop the next-generation of the MICA air-to-air missile (AAM) for the French Air Force and French Navy.
The contract, announced on 9 November, provides for the development, qualification, industrialisation, and first production batch of 567 MICA NG (Missile d’Interception et de Combat Aérien Nouvelle Génération) missiles, together with a life extension package for 300 existing MICA missiles.
The new generation missile is intended to replace the legacy MICA missile, which is expected to be withdrawn from French Air Force and Navy operational service between 2018 and 2030.
