The US Navy (USN) is preparing to upgrade pier facilities to accommodate refuelled Los Angeles (SSN 688)-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs), Admiral Frank Caldwell, Director of Naval Nuclear Propulsion, said on 7 November during the Naval Submarine League’s Annual 36th Symposium and Industry Update.
“We’re working on a plan to refuel five to seven 688-class submarines, starting in 2023,” Adm Caldwell said.
“To support this we’ve already embarked on some incredible, very impressive work to modernise drydocks and pier installations at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard [in Maine],” he said. “It’s going to be superb when it gets done. We’re starting the intellectual push-ups to make sure we get ready.”
