US Navy weighs up options for USS Enterprise dismantling and disposal

04 October 2018

The US Navy (USN) will take at least another year to decide how best to dismantle and dispose of the decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65), according to Admiral James Caldwell Jr., director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.

"We don't already have a preferred alternative," Adm Caldwell said on 2 October during the Nuclear Energy, Naval Propulsion and National Security, Symposium, which was hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "We're working our way through that."

Enterprise, which is being replaced by Gerald R Ford (CVN 78), the lead ship of a new class of carriers, was inactivated on 1 December 2012 and officially decommissioned on 3 February 2017.
