South Africa’s crime statistics for 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018 were released on 11 September, revealing a 56.6% rise in cash-in-transit heists from the same period a year earlier, and a 74% increase over the past three years.

Of the 238 heists recorded in the latest figures, 34% took place in Gauteng, the most of any province. In March 2018, the police initiated a major security operation that culminated in a series of arrests over June and July targeting 23 alleged gang members and their purported leader – Wellington ‘Bibi’ Cenenda. The police charges allege that the syndicate has been responsible for the majority of heists in Gauteng.
