Rare earths escape US tariffs on China

The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) released its finalised list of Chinese imports that are to be subject to tariffs from 24 September, however rare earths have escaped the imposition of duties.

The list released by the USTR contains 5,745 full or partial lines of proposed goods of the 6,031 that were initially proposed by the government in July. Under the terms announced by the USTR, tariffs of 10% are to be placed on goods from 24 September, which will rise to 25% in January 2019.

There are 17 rare earth elements in the periodic table: Cerium (Ce), Dysprosium (Dy), Erbium (Er), Europium (Eu), Gadolinium (Gd), Holmium (Ho), Lanthanum (La), Lutetium (Lu), Neodymium (Nd), Praseodymium (Pr), Promethium (Pm), Samarium (Sm), Scandium (Sc), Terbium (Tb), Thulium (Tm), Ytterbium (Yb), and Yttrium (Y).
