Hurricane Florence strikes US Navy, USMC installations

US Navy (USN) and Marine Corps (USMC) installations along the US mid-Atlantic East Coast battened down to face the high winds and driving rain generated by Hurricane Florence as the storm made landfall in North Carolina on 14 September, striking the coast as a Category 1 storm with a 10-ft (3 m) storm surge.
US Fleet Forces (USFF) Command had ordered all US Navy (USN) ships in Virginia’s Hampton Roads area, including Naval Station Norfolk, to set Sortie Condition Alpha on 10 September and begin to leave the immediate area to avoid Florence. Nearly 30 ships got under way from Naval Station Norfolk and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, USN officials said.
