Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera announced on 28 August that the Ministry of Defense (MoD) in Tokyo will establish a committee to explore the development of defence capabilities in the new domains of space and cyberspace.
Onodera said he will head the committee to formulate Japan’s new National Defense Program Guidelines (NDPGs), which are scheduled to be introduced before the end of 2018 and will set out the country's basic security policies for the coming decade.
Onodera said that Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano, the top military officer in the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), and General Yoshinari Marumo, the Japan Air Self Defense Force chief of staff, will join the committee, along with other high-ranking officers.
