Iran was trying to send a message when it held a naval exercise as the United States reimposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic, according to General Joseph Votel, the commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM noted apparent preparations for the exercise on 1 August, when it stated it was “aware of the increase in Iranian naval operations within the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman”.
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) confirmed on 5 August that it was holding an exercise in the Gulf, describing it as routine. It did not release any images or footage to publicise the event.
