Women can now enter voluntary military service (Servicio Militar Voluntario: SMV) in Ecuador.
The first cohort will consist of 199 troops who will be trained in the facilities of the army’s 27th Artillery Brigade and 5th Infantry Brigade; the navy’s ‘Norte’ base in Guayaquil; and the air force’s 23rd Air Combat Wing.
The Defence Ministry’s Decree 056, passed on 20 March and effective from 4 August, authorises the extension of the SMV to one year and incorporates female personnel for the first time.
