UK MoD seeks to mitigate effects of US steel tariffs on nuclear programme

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has told parliament it is seeking to mitigate the effects of the US President Donald Trump administration’s 1 June imposition of a 25% tariff on steel imports from the European Union.

Asked what the ministry was doing regarding the tariffs’ impact during a parliamentary Public Accounts Committee inquiry on the MoD nuclear programme on 2 July, Julian Kelly, director general, Nuclear, MoD, replied, “We have assessed the potential impact …. We are not materially concerned about the direct impact on the Dreadnought programme, though it would clearly be better if we could persuade the US not to apply the tariffs.”
