USMC seeks new ‘delivery drone’

02 July 2018

The US Navy (USN) has issued a request for information (RFI) for a Delivery Drone Concept to support US Marine Corps (USMC) operations from as early as 2019/20.

The RFI, issued by the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) on 29 June, is for a rugged and lightweight small unmanned aircraft system (SUAS) or a family of such SUASs that is capable of transporting cargo weighing between 25 lb to 500 lb (approximately 11 kg to 230 kg).

Specifically, the USMC requires a man-portable SUAS that can be set up in under 30 minutes; that has a less than 1,320 lb (approximately 600 kg) maximum take-off weight (MTOW); can be used day and night, and during varied environmental conditions; has a minimum range of 10 km; and which is currently technologically mature enough to be operational demonstrated.
