Kongsberg has been selected to supply turrets and remotely operated weapon systems (ROWS) for the 490 Nexter VBCI 2 vehicles that the Qatari armed forces plan to buy, it was announced during the DIMDEX show held in Doha on 12-14 March.
Kongsberg said it would supply Protector ROWS and unmanned medium-calibre turrets (MCTs) for the vehicles. It noted that the contract has yet to be finalised, but said it will be worth up to NOK15 billion (USD1.94 billion) over an eight-year delivery period, potentially amounting to its largest single contract.
A VBCI 2 was displayed at DIMDEX armed with an MCT with a 30 mm cannon and a Protector, but it is unclear what vehicle variants and weapons configurations the Qataris will ultimately order.
Kongsberg said it will also supply communications systems and undertake digitalisation efforts for the new vehicles.
