China’s willingness to offer its defence customers flexible repayment terms has been cited as a key factor in Chinese industry’s continuing gains in international defence markets.
ChinaMil, the official English language news website of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), claimed in a recent report that China had the “most flexible payment terms” of all the world’s major military exporters.
This flexibility, it said, enabled China’s defence customers to pay for military equipment through the barter of commodities including food, oil, and gas.
ChinaMil said this barter-trade method was proving increasingly attractive for customers who often did not have the “hard currency” to pay for military acquisitions.
