NATO is now reviewing how to achieve fully integrated cyber awareness and security at the strategic level for joint operations. The challenge flows from a 14 February decision by allied defence ministers to reform NATO’s command structure, including creation of a new cyber operations centre within Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in southern Belgium.
“The centre will not really be a brand new beast, since we are doing some cyber ops within SHAPE, but it’s going to be substantially reinforced and broadened to support NATO’s cyber operational domain in a more focused and strategic way,” a NATO source said on 19 February.
