Raytheon to upgrade Royal Canadian Navy’s close-in weapon systems

29 January 2018

Raytheon Canada will upgrade and support 21 of the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN’s) close-in weapon systems (CIWS), Minister of National Defence Harjit Sajjan announced on 26 January.

The RCN currently operates the Raytheon Phalanx Block 1B aboard its Halifax-class frigates. The 20 mm weapon system is for protection against missiles, fast inshore attack craft, and aircraft.

The CAD704 million (USD567 million) contract has a 10-year initial service period with options to renew up to five years at a time, and is valid until 2037. The deal is subject to Canada’s Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy that requires an amount equal to the contract’s value be invested in Canada.
