Single European defence market a distant goal, says Commissioner

Permanent structured co-operation (PESCO) may lead to an unprecedented level of defence co-operation among national capitals in Europe, but neither it, nor the other measures authored so far by the EU, will trigger a true single defence market in the future, the EU’s top official for defence industrial policy believes.

“While Europe’s security situation means that the member states need to take their fate into their own hands more than ever before, it will be for them to decide how far they want to go,” said Jyrki Katainen, vice-president of the European Commission and responsible for investment and competitiveness policy.
