Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), in co-operation with the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Sukhoi Design Bureau, has begun work to integrate the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile on 40 IAF Sukhoi Su-30MK1 aircraft following its successful firing from the platform in November 2017.
The result of a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation and NPO Mashinostroyenia of Russia, Brahmos is a medium-range, two-stage ramjet supersonic cruise missile designed to be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, and land. The land-launched and ship-launched versions are already in Indian service, with the air- and submarine-launched versions currently in the testing phase.
