US lawmakers are campaigning harder for a block buy of next-generation aircraft carriers to help curb costs of the nation’s largest and most expensive warships.
Such an acquisition would mark the first time since 1988 that the United States has sought to buy more than one carrier at a time.
At the tail end of the Cold War USS John C Stennis (CVN 74) and USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) were bought in fiscal year 1988 (FY 1988). That acquisition had been preceded by the block buy of USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and USS George Washington (CVN 73) in FY 1983.
