The Slovak government on 15 November voted to select Finland's Patria to supply the Armoured Modular Vehicle (AMV) 8x8 chassis as the basis for a prototype for a new wheeled infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) for the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic.
The Patria AMV was selected as the preferred platform over the Steyr Pandur II 8x8 platform currently in service with the Army of the Czech Republic.
The Slovak government intends to procure 81 8x8 IFV platforms and 404 4x4 tactical armoured vehicle platforms together worth EUR1.2 billion (USD1.42 billion) in 2018-29 via a government-to-government process.
“The proposed form of procurement stems from the goal of incorporating the Slovak defence industry into the highest level in research and development, and production of the infantry fighting vehicle”, read an official statement from the Slovak Finance Ministry, whose authors believe this form of procurement will be cheaper and quicker than procuring an off-the-shelf solution, while fulfilling the highest technical standards.
