As Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) works its way through the trio of Ford-class carriers already in the US Navy (USN) pipeline, company executives are hoping to get possible block buys for carriers.
First-of-class USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) is now going through systems testing in preparation for deployment while USS John F Kennedy (CVN 79) is being built at HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding yard in Virginia.
“CVN 79 Kennedy is approximately 60% structurally complete and 35% complete overall,” Michael Petters, HII CEO, told financial investment analysts on 8 November during a quarterly earnings call. “Construction is progressing very well as the team focuses on unit outfitting and assembly in a dry dock.
