USN BMD operations, bridge controls come under scrutiny in collisions review

03 November 2017

The US Navy's (USN's) comprehensive review of recent warship collisions and other mishaps has called for the service to improve the fundamental seamanship of its surface warfare officers (SWOs).

Released on 2 November, the review also calls for the USN to re-evaluate its surface-ship ballistic missile defence (BMD) operations and urges the service to do a better job of integrating its various navigation setups now in place on bridges throughout the fleet, citing both as factors that helped create a situation ripe for the spate of mishaps.

The need for BMD operations has placed additional burdens on the fleet, the report noted, while confusion of bridge control differences has also created problems in ship navigation.
