Dstl details synthetic biology armour progress

The UK’s Defence and Science Technology Laboratory (Dstl) synthetic biology (SynthBio) armour programme is at Technology Readiness Level 3, with samples currently able to undergo hardness testing, Dstl representatives have told Jane’s .

They also confirmed that a scale-up process is underway to produce a sample the approximate size of an A4 or A3 piece of paper that can undergo live-fire testing.

Addressing the IQPC Disruptive Technologies in Defence Conference in London on 25 October, Professor Petra Oyston said that the main drive of the research programme has been to apply SynthBio technologies and methodologies to improve the microstructures of ceramics for armour.
