Abduction of six seamen indicates severe kidnap risk off Nigeria despite steep drop in cargo piracy

26 October 2017

Six seamen have been kidnapped from a German-owned container ship, the Demeter , off the coast of Nigeria, the vessel’s owners confirmed on 24 October.

A spokesperson for the Peter Doehle group said the ship was heading from Malabo in Equatorial Guinea and approaching a Nigerian port, elsewhere reported as Onne, when it was boarded in the early hours of 21 October. Relevant ministries confirmed that four of the abductees were Filipino and one Ukrainian, with the other reported by Reuters to be Hungarian. The incident takes the number of piracy kidnap victims to a new high, with IHS Markit having recorded 10 successful kidnapping incidents in 2017 so far, involving 53 crew members.
