RSS 2017: Chile joins Mediterranean Sea maritime security data exchange networks

23 October 2017

During the XI Regional Seapower Symposium held in Venice, Chile signed the note of accession to the Italian Navy-led Virtual Regional Maritime Traffic Centre (V-RMTC) and Trans-Regional Maritime Network (T-RMN) initiatives, becoming the latest country to join these networks.

The V-RMTC is a live data sharing project started in 2004-06 and led by the Italian Navy to improve the overall maritime security awareness of naval operators in the Mediterranean and Black seas. The data exchanged concerns non-classified information on movements and locations of all merchant vessels of the participating states, and is collected via voluntary exchange among participants.

Despite the regional focus on the Mediterranean and adjacent seas, the initiative has witnessed increasing global interest, which eventually led to the increase in the number of participants and culminating in the 2008 T-RMN concept, aimed at further expansion beyond the region.
