COTECMAR eyes new Colombian Navy OPV contract

25 September 2017

The Colombian Navy (ARC) and state-run Science and Technology Corporation for the Development of Naval, Maritime, and Riverine Industries (COTECMAR) could sign a construction contract around 2020 for three locally designed ocean patrol vessels (OPVs).

Design work for the new OPV-90 Mk II (alternatively known as OPV 93 C) started in 2015, and likely two more years are needed to complete the last design stages before a contract is signed “perhaps around 2020”, Captain Fredy Zarate Patarroyo, COTECMAR design and engineering manager, told reporters in Cartagena on 25 September.

The Navy commissioned ARC Victoria in July and operates two similar platforms, 20 de Julio and 7 de Agosto , which are all based on Fassmer’s OPV-80 model and built by Colombia’s state-run COTECMAR.
