North Korea's sixth nuclear test and likely upcoming missile launch highlight increasing risk of escalation towards conflict

In a press conference on 5 September, United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Secretary-General António Guterres condemned North Korea's latest nuclear and missile tests and emphasised that the unity of the UNSC seeks a diplomatic denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

IHS Markit assesses that, if confirmed as a nuclear explosive device, the 3 September test would be North Korea's sixth and most powerful to date. South Korean media report official sources as saying that North Korea was moving a missile on a mobile launcher to its west coast, from which the Hwasong-12 missile was fired over Japan last week.
