Auxiliary power for Leopard (ES14E5)

20 June 2014

Steyr Motors of Austria (Hall 5, Stand H398) is to supply its M12 diesel powered auxiliary power unit (APU) for installation in the German Krauss-Maffei Wegmann Leopard 2A7+ main battle tank, which is the latest version to enter production.

The installation of the M12 powered APU allows all of the subsystems, such as communication equipment and air conditioning, to be run with the main MTU diesel engine switched off to save fuel.

As well as supplying its compact diesel engines for use as an APU, Steyr Motors also supplies diesel engines for installation in a number of armoured fighting vehicles.

The company can supply two-, four- and six-cylinder diesel engines for military application.

The M16 six-cylinder diesel engine is a typical example and is available with an output of 135kW or 160kW and normally coupled to an automatic transmission.

This is installed in the General Dynamics Land Systems Force Protection Europe Foxhound light protected patrol vehicle, of which 400 are being supplied to the British Army to replace the highly vulnerable Snatch Land Rover vehicles.
