Exports from Port Sudan face risk of partial disruption from escalating worker protests

29 May 2014

On 26 May, the Ports Engineering Company of Southern Port and Port Sudan announced that striking workers would be dismissed.

Truck drivers of the Containers Transportation Department have been striking since 23 May to demand higher wages and fixed-term contracts.

On the day of the announcement, local authorities detained alleged protest leader, Ja'afar Abdel Gader, the chairman of the Popular Defence Authority (PDA), who objects to the sale of local land that is used for schooling for commercial ventures.

On 19 May, the PDA asked local governor, Mohamed Tahier Alia, to stand down over plans to sell the land, and deteriorating living conditions.
