The Romanian Ministry of National Defence (MApN) announced in a press release on 30 July 2026 that it had received the first 12 Otokar Cobra II 4x4 light armoured vehicles produced in Romania.
Romtehnica, representing MAPN, signed a multiannual contract with Otokar on 27 November 2024 for 1,059 Cobra II vehicles in nine configurations, including the basic version. Worth approximately RON4.26 billion (USD930 million), the contract also includes integrated logistic support services.
Under the terms of the agreement, Otokar is producing 278 Cobra II vehicles at its facility in Sakarya, Türkiye, with the remaining units manufactured in partnership with Romania's Automecanica in Mediaş.
Referring to Cobra II production in Türkiye, the MApN said it had received 276 vehicles by 14 May 2026, with deliveries having begun on 20 December 2025. Mediaş began Cobra II serial production in 2026, with the first 12 vehicles delivered to the Romanian Army in July. The MApN said 216 vehicles produced in Mediaş, including in four new configurations, are scheduled to be delivered in 2026, with over 780 units to be manufactured in Romania.
Introduced in 2013, the Cobra II tactical armoured vehicle is used in 13 countries, including Ukraine, across more than 20 end-users. Designed as a modular platform, it can be configured for a wide range of missions and integrated with various weapons and equipment. According to Otocar, Cobra II variants include armoured personnel carrier, reconnaissance and surveillance, air defence, ambulance, mobile satellite communication, command and control, internal security, anti-tank, mortar fire detection radar, recovery, and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) reconnaissance vehicles.
