India develops expendable turbojet engine

India's state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a 350 kg-thrust expendable turbojet engine, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 23 July.
The engine – developed by the DRDO's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) – is being manufactured by Hyderabad-based Azad Engineering, the MoD said. The first unit was manufactured and delivered to GTRE on 22 July.
The system is India's first domestically developed expendable turbojet engine and forms part of broader efforts to reduce dependence on imported propulsion technologies. The MoD did not disclose additional technical details about the engine or its intended applications.
An expendable turbojet engine is a single-use gas turbine designed to operate for a short-duration mission. It can be used to power short- and medium-range cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, and long-range loitering munitions.
It remains unclear whether the delivered unit will undergo trials before additional production orders are placed with Azad Engineering.
